Abstract:Sodium-activated calcium bentonite is used as a binder in iron ore pellets and is known to increase strength of both wet and dry iron ore green pellets. In this article, the microstructure of bentonite in magnetite pellets is revealed for the first time using scanning electron microscopy.

In production, bentonite is used as a binding agent, but plays an absorbent role as well, absorbing bacteria in the digestive tract. Similarly, when used as a landfill liner, bentonite absorbs heavy metals and organic compounds, helping to prevent contamination of surrounding water sources. ³

The material is initially crushed and, if necessary, activated with the addition of soda ash (Na2CO3). Bentonite is subsequently dried (air and/or forced drying) to reach a moisture content of approximately 15%. According to the final application, bentonite is either sieved (granular form) or milled (into powder and super fine powder form).

Bentonite waterproofing is an exterior waterproofing treatment that is supposed to work by forming a barrier between wet soil and the building foundation. Like any type of clay, bentonite absorbs moisture. As water molecules bond to clay particles, the clay expands, filling cracks and gaps in the foundation so that water can't get in.

Bentonite properties include the ability to expand to ten times its volume when completely hydrated. It creates a very viscous, slippery, almost gel-like slurry that acts as a lubricant. The viscosity (runniness) of the slurry can be manipulated by adding water to make it thin or adding more bentonite to make it thicker.

As a matter of reducing the pressure for briquette making, binder thus plays an important role. Using binder will make some kinds of materials work with different types of briquetter due to the lower pressure requirement. Binder also gives a high strength to the briquette. With different usage, we may choose different binders for our briquette.

The bentonite is non-metallic mineral with montmorillonite as the main mineral component. After processing, the bentonite material has a strong adsorption for the liquid or solid. Moreover, the bentonite kind of litter is closed to the original sand from the outside, which means that the acceptance of cats will be higher than tofu litter.

Clay litter is most often made of bentonite clay, which is harvested through the extremely damaging process of strip mining. Strip mining, a type of surface mining, involves removing massive layers of soil and rock to expose the minerals underneath. Through this destructive process, wildlife habitats are ruined and nearby waterways are polluted.
