The lime compound can consist of oxide, carbonate, or hydroxide of calcium, while gypsum consists of calcium sulfate. Also, gypsum and lime can both increase water porosity. But water porosity decreases with lime as pH increases: whereas with gypsum, water porosity can be improved at any pH. How much gypsum do I add to potted plants?

Both gypsum and lime are used as soil amendments. The usefulness of comparing them is limited because their function is different. Gypsum is added to clay and heavy soils to help them drain and improve their tilth, or ability to be tilled, and to remove salt from saline soils. Lime is added to improve the pH of acidic soils. Gypsum is a mineral, mostly made up of calcium sulphate. It is sometimes surface-mined, and sometimes recovered when coal plant emissions are scrubbed. Mined gypsum also might contain contaminants like heavy metals. Don't confuse gypsum with lime, i.e. ground limestone containing calcium that raises soil pH.

Gypsum (CaSO4 · 2H2O), the most common of the sulphate minerals, is also known as alabaster (a fine-grained massive form), satin spar (a fibrous variety of gypsum), or selenite (colourless transparent gypsum crystals). Gypsum is often found in considerable thicknesses within evaporite sequences and in association with limestones and shales.

Gypsum is calcium sulfate, and lime is calcium carbonate. Both are soil amendments, and both provide calcium. Only gypsum provides a source of sulfur. Gypsum is actively marketed as a soil amendment. Gypsum can be mined. Mined gypsum is a relatively pure and clean product depending on how many other minerals are present.

It is organic stuff, and used to be free, but now costs $1.90 a ton. That sounds like a bargain, and it is, but it is NOT a 1 for 1 deal. In fact its potency for lime is very low. If my soil report calls for 1 ton of lime to the acre, I have to apply 10 tons to the acre to get the equivalent of 1 ton of milled lime!! That is too much!

Gypsum is a very soft mineral that is easily identified by its hardness, cleavage, and solubility in water. Typically clear to white, gypsum may be colored reddish to brown or yellow if impurities are present. Most gypsum occurs in its massive form, as layers of rock that often intercalate layers of shale, limestone, or dolostone.

Gypsum can also help to reduce the toxicity of heavy metals in the soil, while lime can improve the drainage of poorly drained soils. In general, gypsum is more expensive than lime and is not as widely available.
